談「中道」

連日以來,每天寫網誌的習慣沒有間斷,直到昨天,總算因體力耗竭,也就此停歇了一天,而在今日的一整天裡,直到此時此刻,仍有一種感覺,緊緊地咬著想要放鬆的心情不放。原來,是自己內我的「休息」跟「毅力」在心中打架,我覺察到潛意識中,昨天的休息仍然被另一個矛盾的自己批判著。可喜的是,今天的答案很明確!渡過了充實的一天,也在這整天下來,累積了許多的想法和感覺,我知道今天得打鐵趁熱,趕快把此刻的心得記錄下來,若要等到改天再回過頭來寫,就不容易了!這時候,也就不在乎明天爬不爬得起來、或是白天會不會打瞌睡的問題了!根據開網以來的經驗,我感覺到明天有自信會按時起床,而且精神也不會差到哪裡去,且在此刻當下,我感覺到一股精神抖擻的力量在體內流竄著,帶著一片寧靜與祥和,可以幫助我釐清一整天的感覺與思緒。忽然間,我感受到即時創作的那種喜悅,便清楚地覺知到,當理智的判斷力與內在的感覺平衡時,所有浮現出的矛盾與衝突很快就會消失,剩下來該做的,就是順著思緒把今天的事情作好、做完!

在此,我想先插播一段印度思想家克里希那穆提在《全然的自由》中,曾經提出的一個論點。他指出:「有認同,就會有衝突」。當我第一次讀到這句話時,一時之間會意不過來,沈思良久以後,才領略其箇中精義,原來,克氏想要表達的是,當有所認同時,自然也會產生不認同,當有所不認同時,自然也就會生起矛盾衝突。

其實,才在稍早以前,我才遭遇著另一個小疑問「今天要用中文、或英文來寫」?由於對這個問題已經有過掙扎的經驗,所以在今天就很快地跳脫疑雲漩渦,了解到今天我真正需要的是什麼。由於考量到今天的重點是要趕快將想表達的思緒給記錄下來,也更因此深刻地領略到,很多事情過與不及都不是很好,譬如是否要堅持每天都不間斷的篤行毅力,還是真正地了解到時間會證明毅力的真諦;或者是,要不要執著於這幾天以來用英文起稿的習慣,才能讓整體的工作速度更加順暢,當我放下了那些不需要的堅持與執著以後,感覺到的是更寬廣、更富於彈性的遊刃空間,在深刻地了解到自己缺乏什麼的時候,我需要什麼的答案便會很快地就跑了出來!

以上是兩例關於「中道」的體認,且讓我順著今日的主題把話鋒一轉。其實,長久以來,對於「中道」,我一直有著某種程度的喜好,打從「中道」思想的根源談起,這當然跟中華文化非常有關。所謂「中道」,當是不偏不倚,無所偏頗。中華民族以漢族為中心,兼容並蓄,於過去這四、五千年以來,引領著文明演進的風騷,影響著日、韓及東南亞各國。暫且先撇開當今的政治現實不提,從民族的淵遠流長談起,現在最令華人自豪的,當是流傳了數千年的中華文明,跨越不同種族、融合儒家、道家、佛家思想,延續到廿一世紀的今天,還依然傳承著如此的文化精髓。但是,到了清朝盛世中葉以後,由於清廷的閉關自守,與西方科學文明的接軌有所斷層,而導致了近代中國的衰落。

儘管如此,近代中國的動盪,其實還孕藏著一股更深層的包容力。且說,當今的西方文明主要是根源於希臘羅馬文化,在經歷過文藝復興、啟蒙、及理性等時期以後,才漸漸萌生出各種科學理論。若說,在羅馬帝國崩裂以後,整個中古時期進入了黑暗時代,當時的西歐,在歷史上,被認定是未開化蠻族所統治。總算,在受到基督教的洗禮以後,漸漸地啟蒙了人們使能更接近神的教誨,造就了歷史上著名的「歌德」時期,為日後的文藝復興時期,奠下了更深厚的文明演進基礎!反觀有別於西方的東方文化,中國在東亞細亞,素以先進之文明大國自居,儘管在近幾百年來科技節節地落後,但終究也讓滿族文化融合成中華文化的新血。又說,有別於黑暗時期西歐的未開化民族,中國本是文明古國,當中華文化與今日西方科技文明相融合以後,一個超越傳統東西文化差異的新文明,儼然默默地早已展開!這是我在美國留學時期,於拜讀西洋藝術史時,所洞見到的一個時代趨勢。最後,就以唐代名臣魏徵的名言, 為今天劃上句點:「以銅為鏡,可以正衣冠;以人為鏡,可以明得失;以史為鏡,可以知興替。」我們明天再會。¶

昨日的呼喚

一種無名的韻律在我腦海呼喚,
不知是什麼樣的訊息?
我等待著答案。
聽了一聽我內心的吶喊,
摸不清會否是遠方友人所帶來的震撼,
這樣吟詩般的言語彷彿舞伴,
儘管文言文的詩詞我也喜歡,
換換白話文的妙漫滋味又是一番。
究竟這樣子的心情在遙遠的未來是否依然存在?
就讓所有已經沈睡的過去得以醒來。
當昨日今日無所別於明日,
若苟日新日日新又日新像飛舞的蝴蝶不屑一顧蟲兒,
我又見一群又一群的蟲兒飛上天空漫遊花海。
在週而復始的擺盪間忽然我一睹平安,
就讓這世間的紛紛擾擾沈澱在可期的未來……¶

Behind the scenes "Merry X'mas 2004"

中文→「2004耶誕賀卡」幕後花絮

Creating tools and environment:
• Hardware: Apple iMac G4/1.25GHz, 20” display; JVC GR-DX300U DV Camcorder with still camera feature.
• Software: Apple iPhoto 4; Adobe Photoshop CS
• Shooting Place: Villa Cosmos, Yangmei, Taoyuan, Taiwan

0. Shooting Object: Poinsettia (Theme for X’mas).

1. Import photos to iPhoto.

2. New blank document: 416 x 312 pixels, the standard size for iCard, RGB mode in Photoshop.

3. Open the background image (medium shot). Resize to it to be able to fit. Drag it to the new document. Set opacity to 15%.

4. Open the main object image (close-up). Use magic wand tool to select and clear its background. Drag to the new document. Arrange position to left (our eyes intend to see things from left to right). Rotate it for 180 degree. Flip the step 3 background image layer(to make two poinsettias easier to be recognized).

5. Open the deco object image (underneath shot). Crop the left one with more recognizable form. Resize. Drag to the new document.

6. Duplicate the deco object layers until filling the four-side edge of new document to create a frame. Rotate the object if needed. Apply them the drop shadow effect to create the visual depth.

7. Duplicate the main object layer. Use pen tool to draw the outline of the red leaf. Select the outlined area. Invert the selection. Clear the selection. Apply drop shadow effect on this leaf. Make sure it is over the deco frame layers. Do the same process on the bottom two red leaves.

8. Use type tool to type the texts while altering their colors to create variation. Arrange the type with a suitable composition.

9. The above steps are the processes for creating the image of the card. After that, I uploaded it on my pictures folder inside iDisk, provided by Apple’s .mac online service. Afterwards, just get online to the iCard page inside .mac service. Follow the onscreen instructions to make it an e-card and send it to friends.¶

蘋果iPhoto 4數位相片管理程式 Part II

前文Part I。我們將在今天,介紹如何用iPhoto來整理照片。

2. 整理:
*2-1. 調整照片顯示尺寸大小:參考下圖,用滑鼠指在水滴形狀按鈕上方,壓住滑鼠按鈕不要放掉(可稱之為滑鼠操作之拖曳法),左右移動滑鼠,可以看到照片的顯示尺寸在螢幕上的變化,在同時瀏覽很多照片時,使用這個功能,非常便利。

*2-2. 旋轉垂直拍攝的照片:當碰到照片需要旋轉時,即可把滑鼠指在此此按鈕上方,壓下滑鼠按鈕一下,即可左旋90度;如果您的照片需要右旋90度,則請先搭配按下鍵盤上的"option"鍵不要放掉,您會看到按鈕變成右旋90度的標示,在這個時候,壓下滑鼠按鈕一下,就可以把照片往右轉90度。

*2-3. 新增一本相簿:在資料顯示區正下方的操作功能區裡,按一下「+」加號按鈕。

iPhoto會跳出一個對話視窗,詢問你新相簿的名稱。耐心地輸入相簿的名稱,然後按下「好」按鈕。

*2-4. 選擇照片:用滑鼠的游標選擇最上面的「照片圖庫」,代表您可以在照片檢視區內,看到所有曾經輸入過該台電腦的照片。用滑鼠把想要的照片用拖曳的操作法,把選擇的照片框起來。

*2-5. 將相片放到相簿內:將剛剛所選擇好的照片,往左方的相簿管理區移動,把滑鼠游標停在所要放置的相簿內,然後放掉滑鼠按鈕。

*2-6. 編輯相簿或相片資訊:用滑鼠在資料顯示區內的資料框按一下,程式會顯示輸入狀態的游標,在這時候,可以輸入您想對照片或相簿之重新命名,及相關資訊。

中英文寫作方法之對應

如果您正在學習英文寫作,但是您的母語不是英文,這篇文章記錄著我的英文寫作妙方,願與您一同分享。

自小我在台灣長大,在這裡人們說的是國語,不論在台灣和中國,其皆為官方所使用的語言。我在美國獲得我的大學文憑,而當地使用的是英文。在加州州立大學系統中,許多學校要求不論是美國當地學生、或是國際學生,必須於畢業之前,通過作文能力測驗。若說要寫中文作文,我當然沒有問題,想當年在台灣的高中聯招,也都必須考國文作文。

到美國求學之前,由於就讀於專科學校而非一般高中,我從不曾寫過英文作文。更慘的是,在大三程度之英文作文課中,也曾經被當了兩次。儘管如此,在挫敗過兩次以後,我如何能通過英文作文課呢?以下是切身的故事。

記得在制式的中文寫作方法中,最重要的是它的「起、承、轉、合」。相較於英文,其八股式的論文寫法是破題法,在第一個段落時,便要把全文之大綱重點詳細列舉出來(譯註:在翻譯過程的當下,我才回憶起「破題法」這三個字,曾經在國文課本裡出現過)。每當我收到老師改回來的作文裡,她們總會問我:「在這個句子中你陳述了這件事情,在之後的那個句子中,你又提到那件事情,為什麼?」

在這些學期中,我對這個問題的答案感到無比好奇。總算,在經過了一連串的家庭作業挑戰後,我找到了答案,因而了解到之前兩堂課為何沒能通過,其關鍵在於「前後兩個不同陳述句之間,我必須加上一些『語氣轉變的字眼』」

什麼是這些「語氣轉變的字眼」呢?就像是however, thus, indeed, nontheless等等這些副詞。我發覺用中文寫作時,由於中文的文法沒有英文來得嚴謹,很多地方可以省略,這些語氣轉變的辭彙,在用中文陳述時,可有可無。比方說,剛剛所提到作文老師問我的問題,我重新再用英文式思惟翻譯一次,讓您比較看看其中的不同:「在這個句子中你陳述了這件事情,『但是』在之後的那個句子中,你又提到那件事情,為什麼?」

其實,這些辭彙的使用文法,我在文法課裡面學過,只是那時候不懂得如何實際應用在文章中。這個花了我三個學期才學會的寶貴一大課,願有人能夠從中獲得助益。¶

後記:在時下電子郵件盛行的今日,我也常會寫信,不管是用中文還是英文。個人以為,文章是用來溝通的一種方法,其重點在於能夠達到溝通的效果。不論是中文制式的起承轉合,或是西方的破題式寫作法,這些都只是培養寫作能力的樣板而已,事情本應如此,不知您的想法如何?也願能聽到您的心聲!

Writing in English versus in Chinese

If you are learning English writing, but your native language is not English. This is my English writing tip for you.

I grew up in Taiwan where people speak Mandarin, which is the official dialect in Taiwan and China. I had my B.F.A. degree in America where people speak English. In California State system, many schools require students to pass WPE (Writing Proficiency Exam) in order to graduate, no matter the native students or international. I had no problem to write in Chinese, since in Taiwan students need to pass the high school entry exam, which includes writing in Chinese.

I had no former experience of writing in English before I went to the States. The worse thing was that I failed the junior-level English writing classes twice. That was really frustrating! However, how did I pass my writing class afterwards? Here is my story.

In a formal Chinese essay, the most important thing is to follow the four-step-style writing. The four steps are “start,” “follow,” “transition,” and “conclusion.” In comparison with writing in English, I was taught to write the major points of the outlines in the first paragraph. Yet, when I received my essay from my instructor, she always asked me, “In this sentence, you stated this, but in the later sentence, you addressed that. Why?”

I had been wondering its answer for those semesters. Eventually, after times of homework challenging, I finally dug it out! Indeed, the answer is quite simple: “I was missing the transitions between two different statements.”

What are these transitions, such as however, thus, indeed, nontheless? I realized that when writing in Chinese, there are many details could be omitted, since the Chinese grammar is not as exactitude. When writing in Chinese, we can leave these transitions there, or just omit them. For example, if I state the question that my instructors asked me again in Chinese thinking, you can compare its difference. "In this sentence, you stated this. In the later sentence, you addressed that. Why?”

I actually learned the grammar of using transition in my grammar class, but I was not sure how to apply them in an essay. It took me three semesters to learn this great lesson, and I wish someone could benefit from my sharing today.¶

Post Script: Since e-mail gets so popular nowadays, I write e-mails frequently in either English or Chinese. I think writing is a way of communication. The key thing about communication is to communicate. No matter the Chinese four-step-style writing, or the Western hit-the-point style at the beginning, they are some kind of template for writing. This is how I feel that it supposes to be. Does this make sense to you or not? I'd like to hear some comments from you!
